Databricks Genie implementation

Genie that gives the right answer, not just a fast one.

Genie is only as good as the data model and metadata under it. As a Databricks Consulting Partner, we do that groundwork, then build, benchmark and roll out Genie spaces your business users can trust. You can work with us directly.

What we do

The work that makes Genie trustworthy

Pointing Genie at a raw schema gets you a good demo and then a wrong number. These six areas are where we spend the time.

Metadata Genie can actually use

Table and column descriptions in Unity Catalog written for a model that only knows what your metadata tells it. Columns named amt_2 and flag_x are where wrong answers start.

A scoped space, not the whole lakehouse

One domain per Genie space (sales, support, billing) over a small set of well-modeled tables. Narrow scope keeps ambiguity manageable.

One definition per metric

If "active customer" means three things across three teams, Genie will pick one and people will trust it. We pin the definitions into views, metrics and trusted SQL before users arrive.

Example questions and benchmarks

A set of real business questions with known-correct answers, used to instruct the space and to measure accuracy before and after every change, so you know it works instead of assuming it does.

Governance that holds

Unity Catalog grants, row filters and column masks set up so Genie answers each user only from data they are already allowed to see.

Genie where people already work

Rollout to the business users who need it, and where it fits, Genie embedded in your own apps or chat tools through the Genie Conversation API.

Genie Readiness Review

About 1 week

Whether your data is ready for Genie, which domain to start with, and exactly what needs fixing first. You get a plan, not a demo.

  • Unity Catalog metadata and table-quality check for one domain
  • Metric-definition conflicts that would produce wrong answers
  • Shortlist of the first questions Genie should handle
  • Pilot plan with effort estimate
What Genie needs before it is good

Genie Pilot Sprint

3–4 weeks

One Genie space live for one business domain, instructed and benchmarked against questions with known answers, then handed to real users.

  • Curated tables, descriptions and trusted SQL for the domain
  • Genie space with instructions and example questions
  • Benchmark set with measured accuracy
  • User onboarding and a feedback loop for the first weeks
Where Genie still falls short

Genie Rollout & Governance

Scoped per domain

From one successful space to several, with the governance to keep answers correct and access controlled as more teams use it.

  • Additional domain spaces built on the pilot pattern
  • Unity Catalog grants, row filters and column masks
  • Genie embedded in apps or chat via the Conversation API
  • Ongoing benchmark runs to catch accuracy drift
What a Unity Catalog migration takes

Timelines are typical starting points and are confirmed after a scoping call.

FAQ

Common questions about Genie

What is Databricks Genie?

Genie is Databricks' natural-language interface over data governed by Unity Catalog. Business users ask questions in plain English, Genie writes and runs SQL against a curated set of tables, and returns a table or chart with the generated SQL visible for review.

Why do Genie pilots fail?

Usually because Genie was pointed at raw production tables with thin metadata and no agreed metric definitions. It then gives confident, wrong answers, and users stop trusting it. Most of the work in a good Genie rollout is in the data model and metadata, not the Genie space itself.

Do we need Unity Catalog before we can use Genie?

Yes. Genie works over Unity Catalog-governed data. If you are still on the Hive metastore, the migration comes first, and that is a large part of our Databricks practice.

How long does a Genie pilot take?

A readiness review is about a week. A pilot with one Genie space live for one business domain, benchmarked and handed to real users, is typically three to four weeks if the underlying tables are in reasonable shape. We confirm the timeline after a scoping call.

Can you work directly with us, or only through Databricks?

Directly. You can engage Zephico yourself. If you already have a Databricks account team, we are happy to coordinate with them too.

Tell us which questions your team keeps asking

Bring the five questions your analysts answer every week. We will tell you whether Genie can take them on and what your data needs first.
